Harmony in the midst of chaos - War, Nature and Love

We regularly see images of war in the news - but does this help us to enter into the reality of those in the line of fire, or does it end up distancing us from their suffering? In this recital, we will dive into this chaotic relationship through music, on a journey that seeks to illuminate the complex dynamics between these three fundamental aspects of human experience.

Beginning with a song by Aaron Copland (1950), a composition that portrays the desolation, wear and tear caused by war, and with "Three early songs" (1947) by George Crumb, a work that transports us to a more abstract world, and which explores the connection between nature and love - songs that challenge the confrontation between hope and fear in our lives.

Continuing with two works by Nicholas McNair, where this confrontation is more explicitly explored in the solo cantata "Changes" (1976), which freely mixes 5 texts from 4 different centuries, in a spiritual journey through psychological death to new hope, while "From Heart to Heart" (2024), with exotic poems by Zayra Yves punctuated by the three poets from Gaza, two of whom (Refaat Alareer and Noor Aldeen Hajjaj) were killed in the same week in December 2023 - is dedicated to the innocent victims of the bombings, mainly women and children.

We continue with "O menino de sua mãe" (1936) by Fernando Lopes Graça, a raw confrontation about innocence lost during times of conflict, intertwined with Alma Mahler's cycle "Five Songs" (1910) in which nature and love try to find their place in the midst of adversity - works that immerse us in a world of intense emotions, revealing the hope and resilience that emerge in the darkest moments.

We end with "Morgen" by Richard Strauss, a piece that takes us to a place of serenity and hope, reminding us of the beauty that emerges after the storm, and hoping that the sun will shine again in this dark period of our history.

Vemos regularmente nos noticiários imagens de guerra - mas será que isso nos ajuda a entrar na realidade dos que estão na linha de fogo, ou acaba por nos distanciar do sofrimento deles? Neste recital, mergulharemos nesta relação caótica através da música, numa viagem que procura

iluminar a dinâmica complexa entre estes três aspetos fundamentais da experiência humana.

Começando com uma canção de Aaron Copland (1950), uma composição que retrata a desolação e o desgaste causados pela guerra, e com “Three early songs" (1947) de George Crumb, uma obra que nos transporta para um mundo mais abstrato, e que explora a conexão entre a natureza e o amor - canções que desafiam o confronto entre a esperança e o medo no nosso percurso de vida.

Continuando com duas obras de Nicholas McNair, onde este confronto é mais explicitamente explorado na cantata a solo “Changes” (1976), que mistura livremente 5 textos de 4 séculos diferentes, numa viagem espiritual através da morte psicológica para uma nova esperança, enquanto “From Heart to Heart” (2024), com poemas exóticos de Zayra Yves pontuados pelas palavras de três poetas de Gaza, dois dos quais (Refaat Alareer e Noor Aldeen Hajjaj) foram mortos na mesma semana em dezembro de 2023 - é dedicado às vítimas inocentes dos bombardeamentos, principalmente mulheres e crianças.

Seguimos com “O menino de sua mãe" (1936) de Fernando Lopes Graça uma confrontação crua sobre a inocência perdida durante tempos de conflito, entrelaçado com o ciclo de Alma Mahler “Cinco canções” (1910) onde a natureza e o amor tentam encontrar seu lugar no meio da adversidade - obras que nos envolvem num mundo de emoções intensas, revelando a esperança e resiliência que surgem nos momentos mais sombrios.

Terminamos com “Morgen" de Richard Strauss, uma peça que nos leva a um lugar de serenidade e esperança, lembrando a beleza que emerge após a tempestade, e esperando que o sol brilhe de novo neste período tão negro da nossa história.
